Invoice factoring

Invoice factoring. Not a loan.

Invoice factoring is not a loan. A factor buys unpaid B2B invoices, or advances against them, so the cash sitting in those invoices can move now. Your customer's credit matters as much as yours.

What it is

Not a loan. You send invoices. The factor advances against them and collects from your customer on the terms in the agreement. Because collection runs through your customer, that customer's credit is part of the file.

When it fits

You invoice other businesses on terms, those invoices are unpaid, and you would rather not wait on the customer's clock.

It does not fit card-only retail with no invoices, and it is not a building loan.

What we need to start

An accounts receivable aging and sample invoices. Who your customers are matters here.

What happens next

Submit one application. We package the file and send it to lenders that buy this kind of paper. Options appear in your account when they exist. Sometimes more than one, sometimes none. You compare terms there, pick an option if you want one, and still review that lender's agreement before you sign.

FAQ

Questions about this product

Site-wide answers live on the FAQ page.

Is factoring a loan?

No. A factor buys the invoices, or advances against them. That is why your customer's credit is part of the review.

Will my customer know?

It depends on the agreement. Some arrangements notify the customer and some do not. Read that section before you sign.

What if a customer does not pay?

The agreement says who carries that. Ask before you sign, because the answer changes what factoring costs you.

How is this different from working capital?

Working capital is one amount you pay back on a schedule based on how the business runs. Factoring is tied to specific invoices you have already sent.
